The quest for community has taken many forms in the history of the United States. Today we worry that our sense of community may be weakening as a result of crime, mobility, and greater ethnic diversity. This book discussion series visits both rural and urban communities, each with a unique message about how people find ways to live together and depend upon one another for support and tolerance.

Bailey's Café by Gloria Naylor. Discussion leader: Sister Rosemary Kolich, SCL, University of Saint Mary

No one comes to Bailey's Café for the food - they're drawn by the grace and magic that attracts souls like alcoholic Sadie; sweet Esther, who accepts only roses for her "services;" and Mariam, the Ethiopian child who may be the bearer of a miracle.
