Dr. Gates Brown explains Eisenhower's involvement in the early days of NATO. Eisenhower was named Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) in December 1950. He believed that building support for the NATO Treaty was the key objective to raise morale and convince the war weary European countries that bolstering their defenses was necessary to ensure lasting peace.
